What is Orangetheory?

Orangetheory Fitness is a gym chain that offers classes or group High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts for their members or guests. These workouts are designed to be performed in a circuit fashion and they combine the use of treadmills, rowers, aerobics, and free weights throughout the session.

Orangetheory's members work with the class or group trainer throughout the session with the goal of having the best workout possible. They advertise that their workout system can help you burn calories for up to 24 hours after they finish the session. They measure the members' progress by monitoring their heart rate throughout the session.

How much does Orangetheory cost?

First time visitors are offered a free workout session before joining. They ask for new visitors to offer basic contact information and to sign a waiver before a session. According to the Orangetheory website, membership rates can vary from one location to another. Their website does show the three tiers of membership: Basic, Elite, and Premier.

The Basic package includes access to four classes per month. This membership has been offered at several Orangetheory Fitness locations for $69 per month, with additional classes available at $18 each.

The Elite package includes access to eight classes per month and you can purchase extra classes at a reduced rate on a per-class basis. Search results determined that this membership is available at some locations at a range of $99 to $109 per month.

The Premiere membership includes participation in unlimited workouts with the added benefit of bringing family members to join you for a reduced guest rate. The most widely reported rate for this membership is $159 per month.

There are guest day passes available, as well as 10-, 20-, and 30-class packages. The rates for these also vary according to your location.

There is no fee for canceling an Orangetheory Fitness membership and Orangetheory even offers 30-day refunds if members are not satisfied with their services. Members must have taken part in 12 classes within the first month in order to qualify for the refund.

How does Orangetheory work?

Members have to check in at the front desk to verify their membership or class credit. The member is then given a heart rate monitor to wear during the class. Classes are scheduled for one hour and members are asked to arrive up to 30 minutes before the scheduled class times. Workouts may be themed with a goal such as "power" or "endurance."

Before the class begins, members are given a heart rate monitor to track heart rate, calories burned, and steps. Members also can earn “splat points,” which track how long they are in the "Orange Zone."

According to Orangetheory, the Orange Zone is when the workout is the most effective and members are advised to achieve 12 minutes or more in that heart rate zone, which is at least 84% of your maximum heart rate. The heart rate monitor is also connected to a screen that displays your data in real time during the workout.

According to Orangetheory, no two workouts are the exact same. This means every time members work out, they will follow a different routine.

What equipment does Orangetheory use?

The workouts include three common fitness aspects: rowing, cardio, and strength training. The cardio can either be accomplished using treadmills, stationary bikes, or ellipticals/striders. The strength training portion changes with every class to target different muscles. These exercises utilize dumbbells up to 30 pounds and bodyweight exercises, either independently or with suspension trainers. The machines offer various levels of resistance that the member can control based on their fitness level and effort.

FAQs About Orangetheory

Is Orangetheory expensive?

Orangetheory Fitness memberships have been reported to range between $59 to as high as $169 per month, depending on location and the type of membership you purchase. Individual class sessions cost an average of $18, which is comparable to rates for most major gym and health club chains.

Does Orangetheory really work?

Orangetheory has had many members praise them for how their structured workouts and programming have helped them achieve personal fitness success. Their program can be successful for beginners and people that are looking to improve endurance or lose weight. Fitness enthusiasts looking to build muscle or improve strength may want to consider another training option.

Is Orangetheory too hard for beginners?

No, and that is because beginners can work at their own pace and exertion level during each phase of the workout. They still have to change stations as the session progresses, but they are encouraged to stop or decrease their speed anytime they feel overwhelmed. The coach or trainer will guide the beginner through the workout to make sure they can complete it at an appropriate and safe difficulty level.
