Recipe: Baked Tofu Fries

Tofu gets a bad rap for being bland. However, its lack of flavor is what makes it so versatile. Like a sponge, it soaks up whatever it comes in contact with: sweet or spicy marinades, sauces and spices.

And with different types of densities—soft, firm and extra firm—it has a variety of uses. It can mimic potato snacks, play a starring role in dessert or replace meat in entrees. Although you may have to eat more of it to get as much protein as meat, tofu is significantly lower in cholesterol.

If you've yet to try tofu, this take on "fries" makes a tasty introduction. Just be sure to serve them with a side of ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce.

Baked Tofu Fries

Ingredients

  • 1 package of extra firm tofu, drained
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Sesame or grapeseed oil

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking pan with parchment paper.

Slice the tofu into sticks and arrange on baking pan. Using a pastry brush, lightly coat the tofu with oil.

Place the tofu on the baking pan, season it with spices, and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on the outside. Remove the fries from oven and serve with your choice of dipping sauce.

Other Options

  • Dredge tofu sticks with grated parmesan cheese, seasoned panko or cornmeal after coating with oil and before baking.
  • Add a teaspoon of dried parsley, oregano or thyme.
  • Fry tofu in a splash of oil in a shallow pan until crispy.
