We're sorry, but this class is over. The last meeting was Monday, October 24, 2022.
The Figure from life in Pastel with Barbara Berry A five (5) week course There are no classes on 9/26/22
Working from the simplest shapes of shadow and light, learn how to paint the figure with vivid pastel. Barbara will guide you in the process of eliminating unnecessary detail in rendering accurate proportions of the figure and face while experimenting with some exciting methods of painting with pastel. Tuition includes the model fees.
Here's my pastel art material list: 1)A small or medium set of nupastels (hard pastel sticks) https://www.jerrysartarama.com/prismacolor-nupastel-sets?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhPbQn5jo8gIVFCCtBh11UQeZEAAYASAAEgLkAvD_BwE 2)a selection of soft pastels: Each brand has its own unique qualities. My favorite brands are Terry Ludwig, Unison, Diane Townsend, Great American, and Mount Vision - it's important to have some neutral grey colors -a few darks, ie a dark blue, a dark green, a dark purple, a dark red -landscape and/or portrait colors can be used interchangeably, in my opinion
A few sheets of pastel paper: Uart sanded pastel paper, any size you’d like and sometimes it is more cost-effective to get a larger piece you can cut into smaller pieces. I prefer the 320 grade and 400 grade (tooth) papers. https://www.jerrysartarama.com/uart-pastel-paper Or Pastel premier https://www.dakotapastels.com/product/Pastel-Premier-Samplers?cat=180&idsku=17120 https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/32551/s/hand-book-paper-co-pastel-premier-sanded-paper-medium-grit-white-12-x-16/
Or -my favorite, Lux Archival https://www.dakotapastels.com/products/LuxArchival https://www.dickblick.com/products/brush-and-pencil-luxarchival-professional-sanded-art-papers/?clickTracking=true&wmcp=pla&wmcid=items&wmckw=10747-1012&gclid=Cj0KCQiA47GNBhDrARIsAKfZ2rDu5YEZt6lib1tc5iTes5sKtrERzmAwNCx2qf-_zuYwE417tVTZgZsaAtJlEALw_wcB
* the above are the surfaces I prefer because they can accept an underpainting -with water or isopropyl alcohol
Please bring these additional items: A hard smooth panel on which to tape your paper (can be a smooth piece of cardboard) Tape to secure paper to panel (masking tape is OK and artist tape is even better) Some people like to blend colors with a small piece of styrofoam pipe insulation or pastel/charcoal blending sticks made of rolled up paper, https://www.jerrysartarama.com/creative-mark-complete-blending-set
I carry all of my equipment other than my paper mounted onto a piece of cardboard in one of those sturdy grocery store woven recycled plastic grocery bags.
