This series of self-defense clinics will draw upon all of the traditional martial arts to teach students practical methods for defending themselves as well as serving as a basic introduction to Japanese martial arts. The first sessions will stress basic moves such as punching, kicking, and escaping from grabs. The latter sessions will move into joint locks and throws used in Aikido. The clinics will be taught by Dr. Barry Ackerson who is a 5th degree black belt in Gyokushin Ryu Aikido and was awarded the title of “Shihandai” in 2017 by Shihan Teruma Washizu. Dr. Ackerson has been active in Aikido and Japanese martial arts for over 45 years. He has trained all over the U.S., Canada, and at the hombu (home dojo) in Shizuoka, Japan in Aikido, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and Karate.
