OIL PAINTING: A TRADITIONAL APPROACH

Course Description: In this course, you will learn about the tools, materials and traditional techniques of oil painting. Learn how to do an imprimatura underpainting and build on top of that sketch. Learn to apply exaggerated color blocks across the painting before correcting and refining color and value shapes to create a naturalistic painting. Choose your own subject matter. There will be demos and one on one instruction.
SUPPLIES: PAINTING SURFACE: Options include Canvas paper pad, ARCHES oil paper pad, primed stretched canvas, wood Panels. approximate size relative to the brand and type of surface you buy, but try to work at least 12”x14” or 12” x16”.
BRUSHES (Synthetic brushes for oil) 1 synthetic filbert for oil 1/2 “ wide (13mm) 1 synthetic flat for oil 1” wide (26mm) 1 synthetic flat brush for oil 1/2” wide (13mm) 1 synthetic round brush for oil size #8 (5.6mm wide, 22mm long) 1 NATURAL hog bristle brush that is about 1” wide (25mm) Bright or Filbert is okay.
Buy individual brushes or a good oil brush set that includes rounds, flats and filberts
PAINT: Double Primary Palette with white, black and a neutral. Use professional-quality paints if you can. Burnt sienna (or burnt umber or raw umber), Permanent rose (or alizarin crimson) Cadmium Red *hue, Cadmium yellow *hue, Yellow ochre, Lemon yellow, Viridian, Ultramarine blue, Ivory black Titanium white or any PW 6 *safer alternative
ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES Masonite board if you are using paper pad, Viva paper towels, metal palette knife, 2B pencil, pencil sharpener, vinyl eraser, 3M painter’s tape, toned palette (glass or disposable), small container of odorless mineral spirits such as Gamsol. (For a safer solvent use: Sennelier Green for Oil Thinner. 100% non toxic, biodegradable) The Masters Brush cleaner and preserver, small container of linseed oil, Gamblin solvent free fluid or gel medium, glass container with a lid (empty glass peanut butter jar and lid for example) Safflower oil to clean brushes, tracing paper, cotton ear swabs for lifting out color.
OPTIONAL: Silicoil brush cleaning tank (glass with metal coil inside) *You will need access to the internet and a printer
