Introduction to Painting with Watercolors
When: Wednesdays: November 10, 17 (no class November 24) December 1, 8, 15 Where: San Marcos Dunbar Recreation Center, 801 W. MLK Time: 10 AM to Noon PM Fee: $25:00
Course Description: The luminous quality of watercolor can help even the inexperienced painter create beautiful images. In this class you will not learn how to be a professional artist, but you can gain satisfaction and enjoyment merely by putting color on paper. Working with transparent watercolor, participants will learn about composition, colors and brush techniques. Students will learn how to work with this challenging medium to create paintings they'll be proud to display. Talent, art education, and experience are not required; just come with enthusiasm to learn.
Supplies Online sources include Cheap Joe’s, Jerry’s Artarama, and Dick Blick; Walmart online has free 2-day shipping; locally, check Michael’s or Hobby Lobby
  • Paper: Strathmore Watercolor tablet, 9” x 12” or larger. You can use any brand of paper—block, tablet, or loose. Unless you buy a block, you’ll need a drawing board or Masonite on which to tape your paper. (There will be several loaners available).
  • Brushes: Three to six round brushes of varying sizes (#2 to #12). Unfortunately, manufacturers are not consistent in brush sizing, so just make sure to get a small, medium, and large. Choose natural or synthetic fibers, depending on how much you want to spend. Taklon brushes are good and inexpensive.
  • Watercolors: Watercolors come in tubes, half pans, or sets. Staedtler’s watercolor set of 24, or a similar set, would be a good choice. (Do not buy gouache!)
  • Watercolor palette with at least 12 wells (if your paint set doesn’t come in a palette)
  • 1” painters’ tape
  • Plastic tumbler or cup for water
  • Paper towels
  • #2 Pencils
  • Eraser
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Access to camera, computer, and printer
About Your Presenter: Kelly King Kelly started studying and creating art as a teenager and still loves it! She taught in the public schools for 29 years; for 10 years her focus was on teaching art.
