About this event

We're sorry, but this activity is over. The last meeting was Wednesday, November 2, 2022.

When: Wednesdays: October 5, 12, 19, 26 and November 2 Where: San Marcos Dunbar Recreation Center, 801 W. MLK Time: 10 AM to Noon PM Fee: $25:00
Course Description: The luminous quality of watercolor can help even the inexperienced painter create beautiful images. In this class you will learn to enhance your paintings with masking techniques, glazes, and the use of various materials to achieve different effects. You will learn more about composition and color by setting up a still life and by using the grisaille method to set values. Participants should come to the class knowing the basics of working with transparent watercolor, composition, colors, and brush techniques. Students will learn how to create paintings they’ll be proud of. Talent, art education, and experience are not required; just come with enthusiasm to learn.
MATERIALS LIST Online sources include Cheap Joe’s, Jerry’s Artarama, and Dick Blick. Locally, check Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. Paper: Strathmore Watercolor tablet (140 lb. cold press), 9” x 12” or larger. You can use any brand of paper—block, tablet, or loose. Unless you buy a block, you’ll need a drawing board or Masonite on which to tape your paper. (There will be several loaners available.) Brushes: Three to six round brushes of varying sizes (#2 to #12). Unfortunately, manufacturers are not consistent in brush sizing, so just make sure to get a small, medium, and large. Choose natural or synthetic fibers, depending on how much you want to spend. Taklon brushes are good and inexpensive. Watercolors: Watercolors come in tubes, half pans, or sets. Staedtler’s watercolor set of 24, or a similar set, would be a good choice. (Do not buy gouache!)
Additional Supplies: Watercolor palette (if your paints don’t come in a palette) 1” painters’ tape Jar or cup for water Paper towels #2 Pencils Kneaded eraser Stencil film (a small package of 5 sheets of 8x10) Masking fluid Access to camera, computer, and printer
About Your Presenter: Kelly King Kelly started studying and creating art as a teenager and still loves it! She taught in the public schools for 29 years; for 10 years her focus was on teaching art. Her art talent and teaching experience make her the ideal presenter. If you have questions about purchasing art supplies, please contact Kelly at kingke666@gmail.com.
