n Quiz Bowl, two teams of four students each demonstrate the breadth and depth of their academic knowledge in buzzer-based competitions. Competitions are fast-paced and multi-disciplinary, bringing together students whose academic interests range from literature, geography, history, and mythology to physics, chemistry, biology, math and computer science. The BASIS Independent McLean High School Quiz Bowl Club competes in local, state-wide, and regional tournaments with the goal of qualifying for national tournaments organized by NAQT and PACE. New players who have not yet attended a national tournament have the opportunity to build their knowledge and skills through novice tournaments. The Club also participates annually in It's Academic, a televised quiz show now in its 60th year. Club members are expected to attend one weekly club practice at school, one online practice on Saturdays (potentially more in the lead up to tournaments), and to supplement practices through independent study and organized, small group study sessions. Fundamentally, Quiz Bowl is about promoting a love of learning, drawing on, reinforcing, and extending what students learn through their coursework. All fees related to off-campus competitions will be handled separately and will be the responsibility of the parent. Please contact the Auxiliary Department with specific club questions.
