: This class is open to competitive debaters and students new to debate. Competitive debaters will spend class time preparing and workshopping arguments for upcoming tournaments. Debaters in this class are welcome to participate in the American Parliamentary Debate Association tournaments on the local and national levels. These tournaments are hosted by Yale, MIT, Harvard, and other campuses. Students are also welcome and encouraged to participate in the National High School Parliamentary Debate Program (HSPDP). Students who register for this course are not required to compete–the objective of the course is to prepare students for the myriad scenarios in life that will require public speaking, debate, and presentation skills. Debate builds literacy and multimedia research skills, fosters critical thinking and expanded perspectives, increases confidence, trains students to listen effectively and strengthens civil engagement and discourse.
