About this event

UNH Extension Master Gardener Series: Invasive Plants What are invasive plants and how do they impact our environment? An invasive plant is not native and is likely to cause significant economic and ecological harm. Invasive plants can reduce biodiversity, degrade wildlife habitat and water quality, and inhibit forest regeneration. They grow quickly and aggressively and compete with native plants for water, nutrients, light and space. Because they are not native to our local ecosystem, they have no natural enemies! Come learn all about invasive and how to plant more responsibly in your own yard. Information About the Presenter Ruth Axelrod Ruth is an Advanced Master Gardener volunteer. She was trained in New Hampshire, and completed extensive training in eco-friendly gardening, composting and storm water management (including designing and constructing rain gardens). In New Hampshire, she is also a member of the speakers’ panel for the Speaking for Wildlife program, which educates people about the needs of local wildlife and what they can do to help maintain their habitats. Ruth grew up in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains where she learned to love nature in all its forms. Her mother was a passionate gardener who raised gladiolas and dahlias in green-painted World War II surplus gasoline canisters on the edge of the rocky cliff in front of their home. Ruth’s passion is helping people learn to recognize the ecological impacts of their landscaping and gardening practices and, therefore, to be able to make choices that positively impact their local ecosystems. Her particular interest is creating environments that nourish the spirit while balancing human needs with those of wildlife and protecting the quality of water in our rivers, lakes and bays. Thur.
