About this event
Can a dog really help you with your hearing loss? Find out how Floyd, a specially trained hearing dog from Dogs for Better Lives, assists Brent Mershon with everyday sounds like telephone rings, door knocks, and smoke alarms. We’ll also learn what living with a service animal—at home and in public—is really like and the adjustments it requires. This class is made possible free of charge by: Dogs for Better Lives (dogsforbetterlives.org). Some questions we'll discuss: What’s it like to take a dog to a grocery or store? Can a service animal go into a restaurant? Why can’t I pet a service dog in public? How much does a hearing dog cost? What’s it like to travel with a service animal? Are people ever rude about having an animal in public? About Brent: After years of mild hearing loss, Brent’s hearing significantly worsened in spring of 2017. After realizing he was struggling to respond to everyday sounds, he began to explore hearing dogs. As a result, Floyd, a three-year-old Black Labrador, joined the Mershon household in December 2018—and has been helping Brent ever since. Note: While there is no course fee for this class, pre-registration is still required.
