In this class, students will learn the basics of traditional oil-painting while honing their observational skills. There will be two main objectives throughout the 6-week course: The first three weeks will be a classical still-life approach where students will develop composition sketches and practice painting techniques. A more modern still-life approach will be covered in the latter three classes where students will create their own still life set ups and paint from observation while incorporating their own personal styles. Experimentation will be encouraged; for example, the forms can be abstract or distorted, and colors can be applied with palette knives instead of brushes. Students will aim to complete two medium-sized (16x20" or smaller) canvas paintings throughout the course with an option for more depending on studio time.
