About this event
In our small classes, teaching artists engage students in skill-based instruction and hands-on project activities where they can share and celebrate their work. Our instructors are practicing artists, and child whisperers who create a fun, responsive and supportive studio environment for all young artists. Class activities include storytelling, studio time, movement, self-guided projects, and ongoing reflection to build trust and understanding. Join us for a deep dive into the colorful world of watercolors and painting! Along with playful experimentations in color and the paint medium, participants will be introduced to the core elements of art and explore the fundamentals of painting and color theory in a fun, collaborative way. We will look beyond the canvas and discover other worlds through imaginative storytelling, and take inspiration from nature as well as what we see all around us. Along the way, our young artists will also learn about contemporary artists of various intersections of identity and experience to help inform their own painting journey. Full Fall Session: Wednesdays, 9/14/22- 12/7/22, 2:15- 5pm (new times) Instructor: Joseph (Joey) Rose Avalos-Pangilinan is a Mexican American artist and educator currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Joey’s work promotes space as a form of catharsis, in hopes of healing those who connect with his subjects by unpacking broader conversations on themes such as trauma, familial/cultural connection and vulnerability. In 2021, Joey graduated from San Francisco State Univeristy with a BA in Studio Art and a Minor in Education, and received the 2021 Martin Wong Scholarship for Painting/Drawing. This past year, Joey has been an artist in residence at local elementary schools throughout the Bay Area, supplying colorful & vibrant pedagogy that support the development of our young, future artists. Joey teaches onsite and offsite at the Junior Center for Art & Science and Kala Art Institute.
