Read the Manual: Exploring the Human Hand in Fiction and Culture

Kamloops Sports Council Clubhouse • 1550 Island Parkway Dr. KamloopsBCCanada  V2B 0H7 Organized by Kamloops Adult Learners Society

About this event

"You would be hard-pressed to find a symbol in speech and writing that is used more often, and with more variety, than the human hand. It at once represents desire (“I wanna hold your hand”), transgression (“caught red-handed”), and control (“take in hand”). In the stories we tell each other, the body that has lost a hand (think Luke Skywalker or Captain Hook), and the hand that has lost a body (think Thing from The Addams Family) are objects of particular fascination. In this course, we will explore how and why we imbue the hand with such power and meaning. Our discussion will be based on short readings, as well as broad considerations of popular culture.
