Adult Swim-Learning the Basics

Beginner Swimmers will learn fundamental swimming techniques and how to be comfortable in water. They will use kickboards and other equipment to augment skills as they progress, and for practicing skills, such as alternating kicking and stroke-work. Instructor-led drills and demonstrations will help swimmers grasp concepts in alternating stroking and kicking.

The beginner course includes skills in the shallow and deep end such as:

  • Enter water (in chest-deep water)
  • Walk in water (in chest-deep water)
  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from side, fully submerge then recover to surface and return to side (in water over the head)
  • Roll from front to back (independently)
  • Roll from back to front (independently)
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on back (in deep water)
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front, then travel toward safety (in deep water)
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on back, then travel toward safety (in deep water)
  • Arm and hand treading actions (in chest-deep water)
  • Tread water using arm and leg actions (1 minute in deep water)
  • Bobbing while moving toward safety (15 times in chest deep water)
  • Rotary breathing (15 times)
  • Submerge and recover to surface (in deep water)
  • Front glide with recovery (independently, at least 5 body lengths, in chest-deep water)
  • Survival float (at least 30 seconds in deep water)
  • Back glide with recovery (at least 2 body lengths, in deep water)
  • Back float with recovery (independently, at least 1 minutes)
  • Front crawl (at least 15 yards)
  • Breaststroke ( at least 15 yards)
  • Elementary backstroke (at least 15 yards)
  • Scissor kick (at least 15 yards)
To be able to progress to the next level, the participant must be able to do all the skills above including the exit skills assessment prior to the last day of class.

Parents and guardians must stay off the pool deck during swim lessons and not attempt to coach their swimmer based on what they observe during lessons. All are expected to observe sessions from the elevated spectator area, keeping the pool deck clear of non-participants. Please note that we do not allow any person to climb on or through the railings. Accessibility accommodations should be requested through the front desk and discussed with the instructor as well.

For safety reasons, wet bodies are not allowed in the spectator area. Swimmers may dry off completely on deck or in a locker room before being seated in the spectator area.
